Oreana: Owyhee Front Riding, and a Long Way From Anywhere
Oreana is a store, a historic church and a lot of country. What it has in abundance is access: Hart Creek, Sinker Creek and the climb up onto the Owyhee front start essentially at the end of the road, and the ground above opens into some of the emptiest riding in southwest Idaho.
Empty is the operative word. Machines that break out here break a long way from help, which puts recovery gear, fuel range and honest maintenance ahead of horsepower on the list of things that matter. Cattle operations in this country run side-by-sides hard through every season and judge them on exactly the same criteria.
We are about an hour and a half northwest. Distance is why we settle quotes and credit by phone and order parts against your VIN before you come in, so a trip to the dealership is one trip rather than two.
When is the Owyhee front worth riding?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Winter and early spring rain turn the clay roads into a slick, sticky mess that can strand a machine, so wait for things to dry. Spring brings wildflowers and green hills, and fall brings cooler days and hunting season.
Summer works early in the day, but the afternoons get hot and the dust gets deep. Plan around the heat rather than through it.
What machine works cattle on open range?
A utility side-by-side with a bed for salt, fence supplies and a dog, plus enough suspension to cover miles of rough ground in a day. Doors and a roof earn their keep in wind and sun.
Some operations still prefer an ATV for moving cattle through brush and narrow draws, where its agility beats a wider machine. We sell both, and many ranches run one of each.
About an hour and a half northwest to Ontario, down off the front and up the river.
