Serving Idaho City
Idaho City: One of the Best Trail Networks in the State
The Boise Basin around Idaho City carries a trail system most riders in the region have heard of even if they have not ridden it. Whoop-Em-Up, Gold Fork, the Charcoal Gulch country and the long network of mining-era roads give you hundreds of miles without repeating yourself, and the grooming keeps a good share of it usable through winter on a sled.
Terrain like this is hard on equipment in specific ways. Long climbs at elevation cook belts and clutches, decomposed granite eats tires, and dust that fine finds every gap in a filtration system. Set a machine up for it and it lasts; buy on sticker price and you will learn the difference in a season.
We are about two hours west and carry both halves of what this area rides: Polaris, Can-Am, Honda, KTM and the rest through summer, Ski-Doo and Lynx once the grooming starts. One service department for both.
Do you need a registration to ride the groomed trails?
Yes. Idaho requires a snowmobile registration sticker on every sled, and that money pays for the grooming around Idaho City. Summer riders need the Idaho OHV sticker on side-by-sides, ATVs and dirt bikes.
Both are sold through Idaho Parks and Recreation and its vendors. Put the sticker on before you unload, because the trailheads here get checked.
How does elevation change what you should buy?
Engines lose power as you climb, and the high country above town sits thousands of feet above the valley. Turbocharged sleds, such as the Ski-Doo 850 Turbo R, hold their power far better up high than naturally aspirated ones.
Clutching should match the elevation you ride most. Tell us where you spend your days and we will set the machine up for that rather than for the valley floor.
About two hours west to Ontario, down out of the basin and along I-84.
